My son is 17 and was wondering what you would suggest for someone of this age as a first plane?

Hi scoobysue In my openion the best plane for a beginner of any age would be a high wing traier, if he can get to grips with it then he could move up to a low wing warbird like a spitfire.A flight simulator would not be a bad investment, it is much cheeper than repairs. good luck with it.
